Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railway
The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is a narrow gauge excursion train running between Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado. The trains are pulled by vintage narrow gauge, coal fired, steam locomotives. The trains run from late May to late October. Summer is a wonderful time to ride, but mid October is fantastic as the train goes from the Chama or the San Luis Valley up over the 10,000 foot pass and riders get a wonderful view of the fall color change. Rides include a great comfort food lunch at the Osier stop, about half way. There are many options for travel, so go the their website for details. http://cumbrestoltec.com/
Rio Grande Scenic
The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad is a standard gauge system that's based in Alamosa, Colorado. The line had excursion trains to Monte Vista, Antonito and up over La Veta Pass to the small town of La Veta, Colorado. The railroad used steam and vintage diesel locomotives and runs just about all year. Their website was https://www.coloradotrain.com/. Rio Grande Scenic declared bankruptcy and went into receivership in September of 2019 with an auction set for June 2021. Bids have been received but as of November 2022 we have no new information.
California State Railroad Museum and 1897 Railtown State Park
The California State Park system has two incredible historic railroad sites. In Old Town Sacramento is the California Railroad Museum with an impressive collection of locomotives and rolling stock from old steam to vintage diesel trains. In the Sierra foothills in the small, historic town of Jamestown, is the 1897 Railtown outdoor museum. This site offers tours of a roundhouse, steam train rides and lots of great sites to see and photograph. Links for both are on our Links page
